Dorset National Flock Competition 2019

We’d like to start by thanking our hosts for their generous hospitality and making this an experience we will never forget. It was a great pleasure to be able to speak to breeders about our breed in their home surroundings. This competition provides a fantastic opportunity for the judges to see Dorset sheep performing in every corner of the UK. A bumper number of entries for this year allowed us to see more than ever just how versatile Dorset Horn and Poll Dorsets really are.

Dorset Flock Competition 2021

We would like to start by thanking all our entrants for the hospitality shown over the judging period it was very much appreciated. We both felt that as last years competition had to be cancelled that we’d do our utmost to make the flock competition happen again this year as we felt it is an integral part of the Dorset Breed calendar and to receive so many entries was very pleasing to see.

It is always an honour to judge the National Flock Competition, it’s a great chance to see how different shepherds work to create that uniformity of a complete flock of sheep. To get a whole flock of sheep both looking and performing well is no easy task. This year we set out looking for flocks with breed type, ewes that showed plenty of depth and length with easy fleshing qualities of a Dorset that would set them up for long productive lives.

Dorset National Flock Competition 2018

I enjoy judging sheep, and, so was thrilled and delighted to be asked to judge this years flock competition.

With my trusty chauffeur, Anne, (assisted by Sat Nav Serena!), we set about this enjoyable task, travelling to 22 flocks from Scotland in the North to the Romney Marshes in the East, and Devon in the South, taking in Wales and a trip to Northern Ireland to complete the journey.
